Studies of traditional ecological practices in the Yangtze Delta region of China. The study reveals the various vernacular processes which have been used until recently to create a sustainable and holistic living landscape — the use of three-tier fishing ponds, the growing of bamboo for food and construction, the use of mulberry trees to hold the ground and provide food for people, birds and the silkworms which are produced in the area. Building foundations spaced to allow for the maintenance of water channels and the traditional planting of rice and vegetables in a complex rotation system all contribute to a rich sustainable landscape.
